FuturePD - Profession Development for Connected Learning

Welcome

Welcome to the FuturePD website. New technologies are piling up at an alarming rate. Blogs, Phlogs, Wikis and Mashups. What do they mean? They represent a new breed of technologies. Tools for the digital age that will facilitate collaboration and communication. This is an exciting time to be an educator. Make sure you have the skills and the pedagogy to maximise the effectiveness of tools like these.

Why Connectivism?

According to George Seimens,
"Connectivism is the integration of principles explored by chaos, network, and complexity and self-organization theories. Learning is a process that occurs within nebulous environments of shifting core elements – not entirely under the control of the individual. Learning (defined as actionable knowledge) can reside outside of ourselves (within an organization or a database), is focused on connecting specialized information sets, and the connections that enable us to learn more are more important than our current state of knowing.

Connectivism is driven by the understanding that decisions are based on rapidly altering foundations. New information is continually being acquired. The ability to draw distinctions between important and unimportant information is vital. The ability to recognize when new information alters the landscape based on decisions made yesterday is also critical."

These look like powerful considerations. In order to equip our students to live and grow in such a world, we need to ensure their education is aligned with how learning occurs in the connectivist world

SLCWA

Another superb conference - the School Library Conference WA on the 13th and 14th June. It gave me a chance to catch up with Kevin Hennah and work with some great Library staff. Those of you looking for the presentations will find them here.

New Workshops for Term 4 - Web 2.0 Tools in the Classroom I will be doing more Web 2.0 workshops this term and introducing a workshop for beginners. Check the workshops page for details.

Non-Technology Workshops From time to time, I am asked to deliver workshops that are not related to Technology. for instance, this week I was asked to speak on Motivation & Communication for one school and delivered a workshop on Problem-based Learning for another. Both were great fun and I think the staff at both school were pleased with the outcomes.
